Oklahoma City Ballet stages The Nutcracker each December at the Civic Center Music Hall downtown, with the OKC Philharmonic playing Tchaikovsky live. The 2026 run is December 11 to 20, plus a sensory-friendly show on December 21, with tickets listed from $40 to $135. Families who book a furnished home nearby usually spend less per person than on two or three hotel rooms.
Somebody in your family already bought the tickets. Maybe it was Grandma, who has taken every grandchild to The Nutcracker since they could sit still, or maybe it was you, after a seven-year-old asked for the third time when she gets to see the Sugar Plum Fairy. Now there are eleven people coming in from Tulsa, Dallas and Wichita, the show is a Saturday matinee, and you need beds for all of them.
We host a lot of these groups every December. This guide covers when the ballet runs, how tickets work, what else your crew can do downtown that same week, and how to house everyone under one roof without paying for four hotel rooms.
The 2026 Nutcracker has nine regular performances across two weekends (December 11 to 13 and December 17 to 20), then a sensory-friendly matinee on Monday, December 21. Weekend matinees are the shows families chase, and the homes that sleep 10 or more are the first to book for those dates. Confirm the schedule on okcballet.org before you lock in travel, since times can change.
When the Oklahoma City Ballet Nutcracker Runs
The company performs The Nutcracker in the middle two weeks of December, every year, at the Civic Center Music Hall. The pattern holds: two Thursday-to-Sunday stretches, evening shows at 7:00 PM, Saturday matinees at 2:00 PM, and Sunday shows at 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM. Here is the schedule the ballet has published for 2026.
| Date (2026) | Day | Show times | Good fit for |
|---|---|---|---|
| December 11 | Friday | 7:00 PM | Adults and older kids, opening weekend energy |
| December 12 | Saturday | 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM | Matinee for little ones, evening for date night |
| December 13 | Sunday | 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM | Families driving home that night |
| December 17 | Thursday | 7:00 PM | Locals and anyone avoiding weekend crowds |
| December 18 | Friday | 7:00 PM | Groups arriving Friday afternoon |
| December 19 | Saturday | 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM | The busiest day of the run for families |
| December 20 | Sunday | 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM | Last regular shows before Christmas week |
| December 21 | Monday | 2:00 PM (sensory-friendly) | Kids and adults who do better with a relaxed setting |
Dates move a little each year because the run is tied to the weekends, not to fixed calendar days. In 2025 it ran December 12 to 23 with a few extra weekday shows. So treat the table as this year's answer and the pattern as the long-term one, and check the ballet's site when the season is announced.
This Production, Briefly
The current version debuted in 2024 under artistic director Ryan Jolicoeur-Nye. It replaced a staging that ran for years, and the company built it with new sets and more than 195 custom costumes. The OKC Philharmonic plays the score from the pit, and Canterbury Youth Voices sing live during the Snow Scene. If someone in your group saw the older version as a kid, tell them this one looks different. Several of our guests who come back every year have said the new snow scene alone was worth the drive.
The sensory-friendly performance is run with Autism Oklahoma. Expect softer lighting and sound changes and a house where getting up and moving around is fine. If you have a family member who struggles with long, loud, dark shows, that Monday matinee may be the one to book, and staying through Monday is easy when you are in a rented house rather than racing a hotel checkout.
How Nutcracker Tickets Work
Tickets are sold through Oklahoma City Ballet and the Civic Center box office. The published 2026 range runs from $40 to $135 per seat depending on the section and the show. Weekend matinees tend to sell through the good center seats first.
- Every person needs a ticket. That includes babies and toddlers who would sit in a lap.
- The ballet does not allow resale above the printed price, so be careful with third-party listings.
- For groups, call the ballet at (405) 843-9898 and ask about group seating before you buy seats one by one.
- Buy tickets first, then book lodging. Your show date decides which nights you need.
A practical tip from hosting these trips: if your group splits across two price tiers, sit the youngest kids on an aisle. Small children get up, and an aisle saves a row of strangers from a lot of shuffling.
Getting to the Civic Center Music Hall
The hall sits on the west side of downtown, across from the Myriad Botanical Gardens and a short walk from Scissortail Park. Parking on a matinee Saturday in December gets tight because the ice rink, the gardens and holiday shopping all pull people into the same few blocks. Give yourself extra time, park once, and walk. If you have grandparents with you, drop them at the door first.
From most of our homes around the metro, the drive downtown is reasonable, and none of them require a highway marathon to reach the show. Ask us when you book and we will tell you the realistic drive time from the home you are looking at to the hall.
What Else to Do in OKC in December
Most families turn the ballet into a two- or three-night trip because downtown is packed with holiday events in December. The Downtown in December series, presented by Devon Energy, runs dozens of events and attractions through the season. A few of the ones that pair well with a Nutcracker day:
| Attraction | Where | 2025 to 2026 season | Pairs with the ballet because |
|---|---|---|---|
| Devon Ice Rink | Myriad Botanical Gardens | Nov 14, 2025 to Feb 1, 2026 | It is across the street from the hall, so skate before a matinee |
| SPARKLE light display | Scissortail Park | Nov 21, 2025 to Jan 4, 2026 | A walk among lights after an evening show |
| Downtown in December events | Downtown OKC and Bricktown | Throughout the holiday season | Easy to stack two or three things into one day |
| Bricktown restaurants and the canal | Bricktown | Year-round | Dinner close to the hall without a long drive |
The ice rink is the easiest add. Last season it ran 3 to 9 PM Monday through Thursday, until 11 PM Fridays, 11 AM to 11 PM Saturdays and 11 AM to 7 PM Sundays, with extended daily hours from December 20 through January 3. Admission was $15 with skate rental and $10 with your own skates. Those numbers come from last season, so check the current listing before you promise the kids anything.
If you want ideas past downtown, our OKC attractions guide covers the rest of the city, and the where to stay in Bricktown guide explains what that district is like on a busy night.
A sample Nutcracker weekend
Here is how we would lay out a Saturday matinee trip for a three-generation family.
- Friday 4:00 PM: check in, unpack, and let the kids pick bedrooms.
- Friday evening: cook a simple dinner at the house, then drive in to see the SPARKLE lights.
- Saturday morning: skate at the Devon Ice Rink while it is still quiet.
- Saturday 2:00 PM: The Nutcracker at the Civic Center Music Hall.
- Saturday evening: dinner in Bricktown or back at the house.
- Sunday 11:00 AM: checkout, with time for a slow breakfast first.
That schedule has nobody sitting in a hotel lobby waiting for the last room to be ready, and the toddler can nap at the house between the rink and the show if you build in an hour.
Why One Furnished Home Beats Several Hotel Rooms for a Nutcracker Group
Hotels make sense for a couple coming in for one evening show. They stop making sense somewhere around the third room. A ballet trip with kids and grandparents runs on a very particular rhythm: everybody getting dressed up at once, one bathroom mirror that everyone wants, snacks before the show because a hungry five-year-old will not sit through Act II, and a late dinner after. All of that is easier in a house.
- Shared space. A living room where the whole group can be together before and after the show. Hotel rooms put everyone behind separate doors on different floors.
- A kitchen. Breakfast for eleven at a restaurant on a December Saturday is slow and expensive. Eggs and pancakes at the house take thirty minutes.
- Laundry and room to spread out. Fancy clothes, coats, and kids who spill things.
- Bedrooms with doors for early bedtimes, while the adults stay up.
- Your dog can come. Every one of our homes accepts up to two dogs for a one-time $150 pet fee, which is often cheaper than a holiday boarding stay.
For a deeper side-by-side, the Airbnb vs hotel for groups guide walks through the cost math in more detail. If you are bringing a lot of people, start with our large group rentals page.
A worked example (hypothetical numbers)
Say a family of ten wants Friday and Saturday nights for a Saturday matinee. These figures are made up to show the arithmetic. Use the real rates you are quoted.
| Option | Setup | Nightly | Two nights | Per person |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hotel rooms | 4 rooms at $160 each | $640 | $1,280 plus taxes and parking | $128 |
| Furnished home | 1 house sleeping 10 to 12 at $550 | $550 | $1,100 plus cleaning and taxes | $110 |
The gap gets bigger once you count meals. In this example, if the house kitchen saves two group restaurant meals at even $15 a head, that is another $300 back for the family. And nobody has to coordinate four room keys.
The honest caveat: if it is just two adults seeing an evening show, a downtown hotel near the hall can be the better call. You walk to the theater, and you skip cleaning fees. A whole house earns its keep when the group is big, the stay is two nights or more, or kids and pets are part of the plan.
Booking Direct for a Holiday Trip
Every home we manage can be booked straight through us, which skips the marketplace service fees and can save up to 35% on stays of four nights or more. December groups often stretch a ballet trip into a longer Christmas visit, and if you stay seven nights or more, you get 10% off; at 14 nights it goes to 15%. Our book direct page explains how it works.
Check-in is 4:00 PM and checkout is 11:00 AM. That 4:00 PM check-in matters for a Friday 7:00 PM show: you have time to unpack, change, and get downtown, but not much slack. If you are seeing the Friday show, plan to eat at the house or grab something quick downtown.
Planning a longer December stay? The Christmas rental houses in OKC guide and our holiday rental homes guide cover hosting the whole holiday in one place. For families that want a month, we offer monthly stays at Brompton Manor and Quail Creek Manor, and our extended stays page has the details.
Which Weekend to Pick
Families ask us this every fall, and the answer depends on who is coming. The first weekend usually feels calmer around the house side of the trip. School is still in session for most districts, so you are juggling a Friday off or a late Friday arrival, but downtown is a little less crowded and you are not competing with every family that is already on winter break.
The second weekend lines up better for out-of-town relatives. Many kids are out of school by then, college students are home, and it is easy to roll the ballet straight into a Christmas stay. The tradeoff is demand. That Saturday is the busiest day of the run, and larger homes for that weekend go early. If your group is big and set on the second Saturday matinee, book lodging as soon as the tickets are in hand.
The Monday sensory-friendly show is its own case. Groups who come for it often stay Sunday and Monday nights, which tends to be easier to book than a Saturday. If a weeknight stay works for your family, you may find more homes open.
Driving in From Out of Town
A lot of our December guests drive in from Texas, Kansas, Arkansas and the rest of Oklahoma. A few things we tell them before they leave:
- Watch the forecast for the drive, not just for Oklahoma City. Ice on the interstate a few hours out is a bigger risk than snow in town.
- Aim to arrive the day before a matinee. A 2:00 PM show and a four-hour drive the same morning leaves no room for a flat tire or a slow gas stop.
- Two cars in the driveway are easier than two cars in a hotel garage. Ask how many vehicles the home you book can park.
- Bring the costume pieces and tights in a carry bag, not the bottom of a packed trunk. Kids love dressing up for this show.
If anyone in your party is flying, Will Rogers World Airport is the main airport for the city, and a rental car or rideshare from there to most of our homes is straightforward. Coordinate arrival times so the first car can pick up the rest.
Picking the Right Home for Your Group
We manage 11 furnished homes around Oklahoma City, and the largest sleep up to 16. When you call, tell us four things and we can point you to the right one fast.
- How many people, and how many are kids or older adults who need a ground-floor bedroom.
- Which show you have tickets for, so we can match check-in and checkout to it.
- Whether a dog is coming.
- Whether the trip is just the ballet or the start of a longer Christmas stay.
Browse every home on our properties page. If your family is mostly young kids, the family friendly rentals guide shows what we stock for little ones. For a reunion-sized group, the family reunion rentals guide has the homes that hold the most people.
Small Things That Make Ballet Day Easier
We have watched a lot of families get out the door for a 2:00 PM show. A few habits help.
- Lay out show clothes the night before. One shared closet beats eleven suitcases scattered across hotel rooms.
- Feed the kids a real lunch at the house. The show runs a couple of hours with an intermission, and concessions lines are long.
- Leave for downtown earlier than you think. December weekend parking near the hall fills up.
- Bring a light layer for the hall and a heavier coat for the walk outside. Oklahoma December can swing from mild to bitter in a day.
- Take the family photo in the house before you go. Light is better and nobody is cold.
